Illusions of Permanence 2006 to present

Illusions of Permanence is a series of digital documentary photographs taken at the gravesites of strangers. These memorials are not elaborate shows of wealth, but small and intimate tributes. I am fascinated by the rituals imposed upon death, with people trying to make permanent things that were never meant to be. Bodies are embalmed and entombed, then stone markers and silk flowers are left as “lasting” means of memorialization. Inevitably, the stone is eroded, the silk is dirtied and begins to decay. Memorials are personal, telling stories about the ones who are gone and those that are left behind.
